Synopsis
As the title implies, there are swordfights aplenty in Death Duel, a martial arts spectacular that marked the rise to stardom of 20-year-old Derek Yee. The "Hollywood Bible" Variety wrote about his performance, "Yee's charismatic screen presence should take him to superstardom like his older brother, David Chiang." The prediction proved correct, and his performance as ace swordsman Third Master in Death Duel is a great showcase for Yee's budding talent. The costume epic has Third Master fighting evil, saving damsels in distress (including a kindhearted prostitute, Yu An-an), and dueling rival swordsman Ling Yun. There are guest appearances from the top names in kung-fu, including Ti Lung, Yueh Hua, Lo Lieh, and, naturally, big brother David Chiang. No wonder Variety concluded that Death Duel's "Martial arts bumps, kicks, storyline and brothels, make the action sequences highly visual and will intrigue foreign viewers."
